The Earl Wing Chair
The Earl Wing Chair is one of the most distinguished silhouettes in the Winchester range. With its fully deep‑buttoned back, arms and wings, combined with a solid wooden H‑frame base, the Earl blends the grandeur of a traditional British wing chair with the sculptural richness of heritage upholstery. The tall wings create a protective, enveloping profile, while the deep buttoning adds depth, texture and unmistakable maker craftsmanship. Built on a hand‑joined hardwood frame and upholstered entirely by hand, the Earl delivers a firm, supportive sit with a commanding, period‑correct presence.
Craft & Construction
The Earl is individually hand deep‑buttoned across the back, arms and wings. Each pleat is shaped and each button is set by hand, creating a crisp, traditional diamond pattern that flows seamlessly across the chair’s tall, sculptural surfaces. The wings require exceptional precision, as the buttoning must follow the curved profile without distortion, a hallmark of true British upholstery skill.
Its defining structural feature is the solid‑wood H‑frame base, crafted from kiln‑dried hardwood and finished by hand. The H‑frame provides stability, visual balance and a traditional craftsman aesthetic that complements the richness of the buttoning.
The internal frame is hand‑joined from solid hardwood, dowelled, glued and screwed for enduring strength. Every element is crafted using the traditional British upholstery methods outlined in our Craft & Upholstery Guide, ensuring structure, comfort and long‑term durability.
The Earl Wing Chair is available in a wide choice of premium leathers selected for character, durability and natural ageing. Antique‑finished hides highlight the depth of the buttoning beautifully, while full‑grain leathers offer a more contemporary interpretation of this tall, sculptural silhouette.
